Brewarrina to Trilby Station near Louth

Another beautiful day dawned in far western NSW. This morning the road between Bourke & Louth is closed again after opening for a short period late yesterday. We really want to go that way if possible, otherwise we will miss a huge chunk of the Darling by going via Cobar. We have decided to head off in that direction in the hope it will be open when we get there.

Before leaving Brewarrina we checked out the old lift span bridge over the Barwon which was built in 1889 & is one of only 2 left in NSW. This bridge allowed the paddle steamers to continue along the river. It’s not in use any more.

Mt Oxley was our next stop. It is located on a private property 20km off the highway. The drive to the top is not for the faint hearted – a one lane washed out track with a sheer drop on one side & no guard rail. And if you are unlucky enough to meet someone coming down then you somehow have to reverse to the bottom. Luckily that didn’t happen. The magnificent view from the top, in all directions, is certainly worth the nail biting drive up. It was a spectacular sight to see 8 wedge-tailed eagles all soaring over the edge of the ridge.

Coming down

Then onto Bourke –

Finally – the Darling!
The Darling (River that is)
Another liftspan bridge!

Fred is buried at Bourke
His gravesite is set out in the shape of a large eye. This huge granite boulder is at the centre & represents the iris.
The surrounding boulders are from Mt Oxley & form the outer edge of the eye.
Captain Starlight was the bushranger referred to on this headstone.
Historic wharf
There are some beautiful old buildings in Bourke. This is the police station.
The Post Office

Next stop Louth – the road is open!! And what a ripper of an unsealed road it is – there was some table drain driving happening.

And to make it more interesting there was hundreds of wild goats on the road. Luckily they have great traffic safety sense.
A fantastic sign but so out of place in this struggling town.
Mary Matthews monument in Louth cemetery
Is this what you call a lawn cemetery?
So many unmarked graves.
Shindy’s Inn Louth
Finally we are here.

But as the rains are coming we can only stay one night or we will get stuck here. So tomorrow we go to plan B …..
