Wilcannia to Broken Hill

It’s showering in Wilcannia this morning so it was a good decision to cut our Trilby stay short. We were lucky to find last minute overnight accommodation just outside Wilcannia.

We sent the guys into town yesterday arvo on a hunting & gathering expedition for dinner. Of course they got a little lost & ended up in this building. Luckily they could purchase a refreshing ale before continuing on their expedition to find dinner. They arrived back at camp empty handed but proudly announced that the servo sold pizzas. Just as well it was too early for dinner. 😂

Wilcannia was the 3rd largest inland port in the country during the great river boat era of the mid 19th century. It still has many beautiful heritage stone buildings.

Post office established 1880
Court House established 1880
Police Station established 1881
Riverfront warehouse
Knox & Downs general store burnt out in 2002 but locals say it is now being redeveloped into a cultural centre.
London Standard Chartered Bank est 1887
Bank as above
Burnt out church
Black cockatoos

An easy 2 hour drive on the bitumen today to Broken Hill.

We have seen enough of these big fellas on this trip.
They’re at it again!!
The sculpture symposium is located on a hill 13km out of town. In 1993, 12 international sculptors each worked on their own sandstone block with no power tools for 14 hours a day, every day for 8 weeks. The best time to view these sculptures is at sunset when the last rays of the sun turn them golden,
