Wentworth to Wigley Flat SA

Today we said goodbye to the Darling & hello to the Murray. We were in 3 different states, Wentworth NSW then crossing the Murray (border) into Vic, to Mildura & then into SA to Wigley Flat. Only about 2.5 hours driving so not far at all.

Perry sand hills Wentworth on the floodplain behind the junction of the Murray & Darling rivers. The sand originated in the river bed when the river was much deeper & faster & carried a sandy bedload rather than suspended clay as it is today, When the river flows dropped, sand from the exposed riverbed was blown into riverside dunes. The dunes are at least 50,000 years old.
This huge gum is hundreds of years old. It’s trunk & lower branches are buried in the sand.

Our first crossing of the Murray, into Vic.
Between Wentworth & Mildura, acres & acres of vineyards, & they love these palm trees.

Large scale farming out here, cropping, orchards & vineyards.

SA border, fruit check.
Fruit check SA border. We must look like fruit eaters as he checked everything.
Arriving at Wigley Flat. We are surrounded by sheep & lambs. 😍
Our idyllic spot at Wigley Flat, an original settler’s cottage built in 1896. It is right on the Murray & has withstood many floods. It is very peaceful. 😍
A great way to end the day.
