Lincoln to York

This morning we left the rabbit warren & took a few detours through little villages to look at more old stuff. ☺️ It seems to be a recurring theme over here.

Enter at your own risk! 🤣

I have had a request for some food photos….

Black pudding- no way am I eating pig’s blood! It actually doesn’t taste that bad, it’s just the thought of it. 🤢
Yet to try these.
They love their pork pies. 😋
Frozen veggies available by the scoop. Just serve yourself.
Frozen chips & roast potatoes by the scoop full.

They have some pretty wildflowers-

Cow parsnip, it’s everywhere.
This little daisy comes up in the lawns.
These larger daisies are wild as well & very pretty on the roadside.
Wild poppies, just beautiful!

We’ve noticed that many areas (roadsides, roundabouts, parks, footpaths etc) that at home are slashed or mowed, are overgrown, weedy & very untidy. We couldn’t understand why these areas weren’t maintained until we saw this sign:

Is “rewilding” another way of saying I couldn’t be bothered mowing?? We have seen a lot of front yards where the tenants are “rewilding”. 🤣
A bit of rewilding happening in the graveyard.
Can someone please set up a mowing roster??
BYO whipper snipper to visit a grave. We saw some newer graves here from 2019 covered in long grass.
Doddington House.
There is a nice little walk around the lake.
Almost lost him in the weeds.
A glass fence around the tennis court. I wouldn’t recommend bouncing off these ones to return a ball.

Back to the old stuff……

Gainsborough Old Hall, a medieval manor house, late 15th century.
The Great Hall!
The Queen visits.
Check out the carving on this monster of a bed. How would they have got it up the tiny staircase & into the room? It would weigh a tonne!!
Only men were allowed to work in this kitchen. What a shame we don’t still have that rule. The top landing is where the boss man would stand to shout orders at everyone.
It is a manual turn spit so two boys would sit in the alcoves, one at each end, & turn the spit all day.
This reminded me of our campfire dinner at Bindara Station.
What an ensuite (latrine) looked like in 1487.
View from the tower. Power station in the background.

Onto the village of Howden.

Howden Minster ruins. It was an elaborately decorated 14th century chancel & chapter house (meeting room) attached to the church.
There are graves placed in every nook & cranny.
Was hoping I wouldn’t see a skeleton in this one which is in dire need of repair.
Howden fruit house, gateway to the old orchard.
Some words from Robert Louis Stevenson.
The squirrels are very cute but smaller than I remember.

More wildlife…
