Lockerbie to Portinscale, Lakes District, England

This morning was my last chance to indulge in some haggis. No thanks!

Not long after leaving Gretna we crossed the border & are now back in England. The main thing we wanted to see today was Hadrian’s Wall but as usual we stopped off at a few other places.

Lanercost Priory
The Priory ruins
A burial tomb
Burial tomb of a young child
Refectory undercroft
The church next to the Priory – the white stones used high up on the wall were salvaged from Hadrian’s Wall.
On top of Hadrian’s wall which was built in AD122 by the Roman Emporer Hadrian & ran from coast to coast across the north of England. It was 117km long & 4.5m high & was built to strengthen defences of the northern frontier of the Roman Empire.
Ruins of Birdoswald Roman fort along the wall.
Pots found in excavated graves at the fort containing cremated human remains.
Out for a Sunday drive.
Carlisle Castle which was a major strongpoint on Hadrian’s Wall.
Being close to the Scottish border, those angry Scots had quite a few attempts at besieging this castle.
Kaboom!!
Castlerigg Stone Circle
Lake Derwent Portinscale where the weather is beautiful, finally!!
Our beautiful B&B at Portinscale with views of the lake. 😍
7.30pm & the sun is still high in the sky.
